Education that encourages and enables people to become active and shape the future is crucial for a sustainable development. However, in order to tackle complex global challenges like climate change or the use of natural resources knowledge is not enough: Skills such as systemic thinking, changing perspective, developing visions for the future as well as finding and realizing solutions in a group with diverse interests, also need to be trained. A selection of core skills for sustainable development, climate protection and to shape our future together can be found below:

 

     

Systemic thinking
Being able to analyze and understand direct and indirect interrelations and interdependencies between people, aspects of society, environment and economy, both locally and globally. Being able to deal with complexity, analyze and understand causes and impacts of unsustainable development.

Changing perspective
Being able to identify different interests, being aware of own point of views, take another or a new perspective. Using the ability to change perspective to evaluate situations and to collaborate with others for a sustainable development.

Reflecting about own and others values
Becoming aware of own and collective ways of thinking, values, attitudes and behavior, its causes and being able to evaluate them with regard to sustainable development. Being able to discuss the idea of sustainable development as social guiding principle, discuss its underlying values, understand them and relate them to other social guiding principles. Reflect about own and others values, especially notions of justice, and use them as basis for action.

Forward-looking thinking and action
Develop visions for the future and relate them to reality and current directions of development. Evaluate strategies of action, decisions and its impacts and risks. Create future-orientated solutions for a sustainable development.

Taking responsibility and using scopes for action
Discover personal and collective scopes for action, evaluate them and make use of them.

Being able to identify questions relevant for sustainable development, develop solutions together and take decisions in a collaborative way in groups with diverse interests. Discuss different opinions regarding sustainable development and solve conflicts constructively.

Thinking critically, constructively and creatively
Being able to develop own ideas and flexibility, think beyond the current level of experience and knowledge and find innovative solutions.
